Self-inflating sleeping pads have an open-cell foam core inside an airtight outer shell. This is compressed to a very small size during manufacturing. When an air valve is opened, a small vacuum is created and air is sucked into the pad. This process can continue until the foam is the correct firmness. Once you're ready to use the sleeping pad, simply close the air valve. This will allow the sleeping pad to remain inflated while saving energy.
Another advantage of self-inflating sleeping pads is that you can stack them for extra insulation and cushioning. You can even layer them to protect them against rugged terrain. However, you shouldn't use a high-pressure air pump to inflate them. In addition, you should never leave your sleeping pad in direct sunlight for too long. If you're worried about punctures, most self-inflating pads come with a patch kit. If you've punctured a pad, find the hole and apply the patch. After it dries, the pad can be reinflated.
Some new self-inflating sleeping pads may be anemic when unrolled. This is because the foam cells are not used to expanding. To help slow the process, you can spray the pad with air primer.
